Not Fowl But Farce: Unusual Behavior

Farce

On this day, I would see a Ruffed Grouse for the first time. I happened to be there with another photographer, and it kept following him everywhere he went. A lady walking her dog along the path, told us it had followed her friend for quite a distance. As if on cue, a man walked by and the Grouse started running after him. I did my best to try to stay out of it’s way. It was on the ground a lot, and at this point, I wondered if it could even fly.

We stayed for a bit, took some photos and headed back down the path, when we heard loud screams coming from behind us. We turned around to see a young man on a bicycle screaming loudly, cursing, and hollering….” LEAVE ME ALONE.” He had just rounded a corner, and I was scared, as I assumed that he was being chased, and was thankful I was not on the trail alone. He rode into a fence, almost falling off his bike. Then he was back on it in a split second and screaming once again, as he rode toward us, but we didn’t see anyone behind him.

So, we were quite puzzled as we stood and watch. Then the other photographer said to me, “O look, look.”  as he pointed in the direction of the cyclist. At first, I didn’t see anything, but on looking closer, there was the Ruffed Grouse, his pretty tail feathers all fanned out, flying low and chasing this young lad down the trail and pecking him in the back.

When he finally reached us, he cursed the bird some more. Well we all got a good laugh, and the bike rider went his way, probably never to become a Birder, or Wildlife Photographer.

Reflecting On The Past

Reflecting

As I spend some time reflecting on last year’s bird migration, I can’t help but think about this year may bring forth.

Some of these images have been posted before, but they also fit into this challenge.

The Flicker Family

#Animals, #Birding, #Instinct, #Nature, #Photography

The woods are awakening. A multitude of sights and sound echo the arrival of spring. The Flicker’s voice can be heard most of all on this day. We happened upon this Flicker Family as they are preparing to expand their family.

The male and female Flickers are both taking turns to sit on the eggs. Above, the male Flicker sticks his head out as he awaits the return of his mate. It was wonderful to see these two as they work together, sharing their duties, all for the sake of family.

Now that his mate has safely returned, the male Flicker can now fly off and take a short break. They already know their responsibilities and what it will take to raise their family safely in the woods.

Gray

Today the Daily Post Word was Gray, and it just happened to be a very gray, wet and rainy  day out. In the afternoon the rain subsided and we were able to venture away from the skyscrapers, to see the blooming trees.

Nothing was going to stop us on this day, and even though the skies remained gray, the blooms remained bright.

Anticipation

It’s a very dull rainy day today….BUT, I can finally see the lawn turning green, and my spring flowers poking their heads through my rock garden.

With joy I await the return of butterflies and birds to our area.

Swarming Starlings

Swarm

IMG_9056 Starlings copy.jpg

Springtime is almost here and with it will come the Swarming Starlings. For about a few years now I have been attracting birds to my backyard.

However after last year’s dilemma, I’m trying to decide whether to play hostess to the starlings again, for not only do they swarm….they screech, squabble and when all the food is finished they will stalk you  from a nearby tree, waiting for more to be replenish.

At this young age they try to eat anything, including my Zinnias, while waiting to get food from a parent.

God Given Instinct

img_0626-red-wings-copy

Headed South

Well it’s that season again, and if you’re a nature lover you can’t help but watch as the birds take off for the warmer climates. It’s amazing to watch them do certain things purely by instinct, like in the spring time when the female goes off to collect straw to build her nest while the male stands watch near by as her protector.

While out the other day, we saw many birds flying in a south westerly direction, making the most of the wind I suppose. One thing we noticed was, that just about every bird we saw were flying in large groups. The picture above shows a large group of male Red Wing Black Birds. I wonder where the females are at this point, if the are out in front or if they are behind. Perhaps the female Red Wings are behind, while the males are out front to fight off any predator. Even though they may often fight amongst themselves, when a predator shows up they all come together to fight it off.

So often as human beings we seem to forget the instinct that God has given. We try to fight off the enemy in our own strength; we also don’t seem to be able to work as a team, and so we continue to fail; this can happen in our personal lives or in the church.

Perhaps one day we will all be able to learn and take in the lessons from nature.

Tender-Hearted God

thumbnail

Rooted

Although we may not be fully rooted or grounded in our faith, God will patiently wait for us to make appropriate changes in our live, as a mother would wait and watch over her little child.

thumbnail

Fall in High Park

God is waiting for us to come to Him, to confess our sins, and to accept the forgiveness and the healing that He has to offer.

thumbnail

Taken a few years ago at High Park

Once we come before God and ask for forgiveness, He will claim us as His sons and daughters. We will now come to realize that He is always beside us, and not far away as we thought. If we allow Him, He will be our Guide  as we take our journey onward.

Psalm 103: 1 – 4

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul;

And all that is within me;

Bless His holy name!

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,

And forget not His benefits;

3 Who forgives all our iniquities,

Who heals all our diseases,

4 Who redeems your life from destruction,

Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies.

At the right time the leaves are changing colour, and the little Gold Finches, and the House Finches have already started changing colours also. In the spring time the Hand of God will restore the trees with leaves again; the birds will once again migrate and change colours. God has bestowed the freedom of choice on all human beings, and time and again, instead of allowing Him to make the necessary changes in our lives, we keep fighting and resisting Him. Perhaps one day we will accept the crown that He is waiting to give us.

THE WILD LIFE

#Christianity, #Nature, #Raptors

Before I took up Wildlife Photography, I thought myself to be a very patient person. I now know that this is not so. Perhaps there are many lessons to be learned from this hobby.

Juvenile Bald Eagle

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap, nor gather in barns; Yet your heavenly Father feeds they. Are you not more valuable than they? Matthew 6:26

God wants us to have faith in Him. He wants us to believe that whatever our needs are, they will be supplied by Him. Not only are we to wait on Him, but we are to also pray “Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11. To wait on the Lord does not mean that one will just sit and wait, it means that whatever we do, we will be doing it under His guidance, and in order to be guided by God, we would have to be connected to Him through prayer.

The Catch of the Day

My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; He who walks in a perfect way, He shall serve me. Psalm 101: 6 Only the faithful ones who serve God will dwell with Him in eternity.
