Today’s Word: Afraid

We are living in scary times. Each day we are face with much death and dying, reminding us that we are only mortals. While its certainly a time for concern around the globe, with the prospect of COVID19 (Coronavirus) knocking on our doors at any time, we should also put a lot of focus on our Spiritual Health. Our Spiritual health is of the utmost importance, because if we are well connected and in good standing with our Lord…..though we may die, we till have the hope of walking in eternity with Him one day.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather be afraid of God, who can destroy both body and soul in hell. Matthew 10:28

But they shall sit every man under His vine and under His fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. Micah 4:4
Shall not His excellency make you afraid? and His dread fall upon you? — Job 13:11
For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. — Nehemiah 6:9
I thought of these because they give several example of the different circumstances of being afraid, and of what. One of protection of being afraid, one of being afraid of the Almighty, and one of man trying to make us afraid.

“Pushed to the wall, I called to GOD; from the wide open spaces, he answered. GOD ’s now at my side and I’m not AFRAID; who would dare lay a hand on me? GOD ’s my strong champion; I flick off my enemies like flies. Far better to take refuge in GOD than trust in people; Far better to take refuge in GOD than trust in celebrities! Psalm‬ ‭118:5-9 MSG‬‬
I was right on the cliff-edge, ready to fall, when GOD grabbed and held me. GOD ’s my strength, he’s also my song, and now he’s my salvation. Hear the shouts, hear the triumph songs in the camp of the saved? “The hand of GOD has turned the tide! The hand of GOD is raised in victory! The hand of GOD has turned the tide!” Psalm‬ ‭118:13-14 MSG‬‬
Whenever we feel we’ve hit a wall, but God. Whenever we’re afraid, and feel we have no where to turn; God. Whenever we’re right on the edge, God’s Grace; the anchor. Whenever we need our hearts held, God’s love; forever faithful. Strength for the journey, the song in the night. Peace, when the water… overwhelms!

16  And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17  And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
18  And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19  So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
20  But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21  Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went. John 6:16-21

  1. From Isaiah 12:2
“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the Lord God is my strength and my might; He has become my salvation.”

This past Resurrection Sunday reminds us of Easter’s Hope. May we reach out and hold it tightly each and every day.

  2. Here was the Scripture that immediately came to my mind.
Take note about the words “sore afraid”. Then notice what they were afraid of.
Then turn your attention to what was said in response.
    John 6:16-21 KJV
16  And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17  And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

    1. Amen….I love how Jesus calmly speaks to them, letting them know that it is Him and not to be afraid. I sense that He may be speaking those same words to us in the situation we are facing.

  3. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. Psalm 56:3

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
    Joshua 1:9

This other verse does not mention the word afraid, but I think it fits the times we are going through. It is encouraging to me.

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 14:8

    1. Amen, amen. Yes, I also love Romans 14:8 for even though it doesn’t mention the word afraid, its telling us how we can live Spirit filled healthy lives.

  4. “Pushed to the wall, I called to GOD; from the wide open spaces, he answered. GOD ’s now at my side and I’m not AFRAID; who would dare lay a hand on me? 1. Two powerful uplifting passages of Scripture. God certainly is worthy to be praised. Thank you.

      1. Thank you. Yes, I too found all the Scriptures very timely and uplifting. By the end of the day as I was putting the last one on from Warren Richards the passages just about made me cry, yet brought peace and joy to my soul. It was a nice way to settle in for the night feeling the presence and the power of God and His holy angels. Thank you so much for taking part.

  5. But they shall sit every man under His vine and under His fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. Micah 4:4

    1. What a blessing. Thanks so much Margaret for for sharing these different examples of the word afraid, according to the Bible. It sure is wonderful to have the word of God fill our hearts at such a time as this. Thank you also for your valuable contribution.
