Today’s Word: Cry

My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom; Proverbs 2:1-6

The word “cry” or “cry out” is mentioned so many times in the Bible, that is was hard to j pick one verse. What I found in reading a couple of them is that depending on the situation, God may respond differently to our cries.

What I gather from the above scriptures, is that God wants us to cry out to Him in asking for the right things. He wants for us to follow His Words and to treasure them in our hearts. When we follow God closely, He will fill our minds with His knowledge and His wisdom.

When God Remained Silent:

God does not always answer us in the way we may wish, but He will answer us in His good and perfect time. In the below scriptures, David is crying out to God, but God remains silent.

Many times we too cry out to God and He remains silent. After a while many may turn their backs on God and stop believing altogether. David however, kept crying day and night while God remained silent. He however did not give up.

Even though it seemed as though God was not listening, David continued to cry out to Him. If we did this also, this is where our break through would come. I can say this, because I know this for myself.

Don’t give up, don’t give in, but as you keep crying, also keep praising God. And we know He eventually came through for David, bringing him an abundance of peace, for the very next Psalm is Psalm 23. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want…..

My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Why are You so far from helping Me,
And from the words of My groaning?
O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear;
And in the night season, and am not silent.

But You are holy,
Enthroned in the praises of Israel.
Our fathers trusted in You;
They trusted, and You delivered them.
They cried to You, and were delivered;
They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.

Psalm 22:1-5

“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.” Luke‬ ‭19:38-42‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Oh Lord, may our hearts forever cry out… onto You. Our Father in Heaven, teach our hearts how to weep, for the nation. God of all creation, break our hearts, for what breaks Yours! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and He did hear my voice out of His temple, and my cry did enter into His ears. 2 Samuel 22:7

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46, ESV
In the darkest hour Jesus cried out to God. Did the Heavenly Father answer Him?
I think the Father answered by raising Him from the dead and now the Son reigns in glory. Jesus had to go through death for our sake.

From Mark 15:37-39
“Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed His last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing Him, saw that in this way He breathed His last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’”
Jesus dies a cruel death on a bloody cross, yet this Roman centurion knows He is the Son of God. In three days, Christ will defeat death and sin forever when He rises and leaves a dark, cold tomb empty while His Resurrection fills us with hope for our Lord’s Salvation.

  1. From Mark 15:37-39

    1. This is a very good one, and this is why He understands all that we also go through, even better than we do ourselves.

  2. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46, ESV

    Application in my life: In difficult times I need to remember that God is near, is listening and He is working things out. “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:14

    1. So as I’m reading all these verses on cry and crying out, it seems that we instinctively know whether God hears our cries, or if He remains silent for a time….either way we know!! Thanks Margaret.

      1. Yes, so merciful and loving. How He suffered that we might live.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

  4. Amen. God is always listening we just have to keep asking. Matthew 7:7 says it best, it says, “ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
